Direct Access (DAS)

 

The Direct Access Scheme (DAS) has been introduced to allow those aged twenty-one or over to take a test on a large motorcycle of at least 35kW (46.6bhp). Having passed your test you can ride any capacity motorcycle of your choice. Depending upon your experience you could pass your test in 6 days (Novice) or as little as 3 days. Whichever you choose we can be quite flexible in our approach and can spread the course out to suit your needs. We take care of everything, from bike hire to test booking. You don't need to worry about anything, there are no hidden costs or insurance excess for you to worry about.

 

Pre Course Work


As with most  courses, it always pays to carry out some course pre-work. We always recommend that students obtain and read the following books:

 

 

The Content of a typical 6 day course

All our courses are built up using "The Official DSA guide to riding the essential skills" and are aimed at giving you the essential skills to ride safely and carry out all the manoeuvres necessary to pass your test.
Day 1  - The CBT - Here  you will gain the basic motorcycle skills.
Day 2  - Road Ride - At the end of day 2 you will be able to:
Recognise where to look and when to signal. Discover how to manoeuvre your machine on the road in order to obtain the best position which affords you the greatest view. Develop your clutch skills in order to ride very slowly in heavy traffic, Complete `U’ turns and pull away on steep hills. Negotiate corners and roundabouts as well as country lanes up to the national speed limit.Stop in an emergency whilst staying in control.

Day 3  - Road Ride - At the end of day 3 you will be able to: Practice and reinforce those skills gained on day 2. Add some structure to the procedures enabling you to develop your road craft.

Days 4 & 5  - Road Ride 600cc - At the end of day 4 you will be able to: Recognise the differences between the handling characteristics of a 125cc and a 600cc machine. Gain the necessary skills in order to pass the Module 1 (Off Road) test. Carry out those skills gained on day 2.
Note: Module 1 (Off Road) test - This has to be taken and passed before the Module 2 (On Road) test can be taken.

Day 6  - Road Ride 600cc - During day 6 you will:

  • Concentrate on getting ready to take the Module 2 (On Road test)
  • Carry out a number of mock tests in the morning followed up with the real test, usually sometime in the afternoon.
  • Take the Module 2 (On Road test)
     

    About the Practical Test  

    You may now take your test on a 500cc machine, as long as it is over 46.6bhp (35kw). During the test you will be expected to:
    Carry out a number of manoeuvres over a minimum of 30 minutes. These will take in such hazards as towns, hills, roundabouts and country lanes etc. You will be expected to ride to the national speed limit and obey the highway code.
