Restricted
Licence (A2)
The restricted licence is
primarily aimed at those aged between 17 ā 20, although
anyone wishing to ride a smaller, less powerful motorcycle
can benefit from this licence. The A2 licence will allow the
student to ride any motorcycle
that has been restricted to 33
bhp (25kw) for 2 years after
which the licence will mature
into an unrestricted licence. We
take care of everything, from
bike hire to test booking. You
don't need to worry about
anything, there are no hidden
costs or insurance excess for
you to worry about. |

Pre Course Work
As with most courses it
always pays to carry out
some course pre-work. We
always recommend that
students also obtain and
read the following
books:
The Official Highway
Code
The
Official DSA Guide to
Riding the essential
skills.
These manuals are
available from our
bookshop
and provide the
underpinning knowledge
and skill that will help
you with the practical
side of the training.
They will also give you
confidence and enhance
your chances of passing
the practical tests.
This is especially so if
you elect to go for a
shorter course.
Automatic Bike
You may take your test
either on a manual or
automatic bike. However
if you take your test on
an automatic bike then
after the 2 year period,
you will be able to ride
any size bike, provided
it is only an automatic.
About the Practical
test
You may now take your
test on a machine
between 120cc and 125cc
and 14.7bhp (9.5kw) as
long as it is capable of
at least 62.5mph. During
the test you will be
expected to:
Carry out a number
of manoeuvres over a
minimum of 30
minutes. These will
take in such hazards
as towns, hills,
roundabouts and
country lanes etc.
You will be expected
to ride to the
national speed limit
and obey the highway
code. Having passed your
test you will now
have a full licence.
You will be restricted
to a power output of
33bhp (25kw) for a
period of 2 years. You
can however ride any
size motorcycle provided
it is fitted with a
restrictor.
After the 2-year
period you can
remove the
restrictor or ride
any bike that you
want. If you wish to
move up to a bigger
motorcycle before
the 2-year period
ends then you will
need to retake your
test on a larger
machine.
